DEMERITS & DISMISSAL
As an NHS member, it is expected that you manage your time and deadlines.

Demerit System
-
Warnings
-
The Demerit system is a warning system that you are not meeting the criteria that earned you membership in the chapter. Notification of a demerit will be emailed within seven days. Questions about demerits will be directed to a sponsor and within 24 hours of receipt. Failure to report discrepancies will negate option to contest. Upon receipt of your acceptance letter, you are considered a probationary NHS member. Therefore, any demerit received after the receipt of this letter is valid.
-
-
Reasons for a demerit
-
Late arrival or absence from a meeting (Please see the NHS Monthly Meetings document under the Policies folder)
-
Cancellation of service (with less than 24 hour notice) without getting a replacement
-
Not meeting deadline for dues, canned drive, and/or toy drive
-
Not having required hours of service by the deadline
-
Failure to turn in required items by the deadline
-
Dismissal System

-
Faculty Council
-
If you receive 3 demerits during your time in NHS, you will be dismissed. However, if you would like to appeal, you have the option to meet with the faculty council. You must have extenuating circumstances to appeal. The purpose of the demerit system is to warn you that you are not meeting requirements. Asking for further chances without a good reason will not be granted.
-
If you would like to schedule an appeal, you must email Mr. Huntington to schedule an appointment. The request for appeal must be within 7 days of receipt of the letter or email and must be sent as an email to Mr. Huntington.
-
Parents may attend for support, but may not speak on behalf of the student.
-
The principal shall annually appoint a Faculty Council composed of 5 members of the school’s faculty who may serve consecutive terms. The principal is not a member of the voting Faculty Council.
-
The NHS sponsor will present the situation to the Faculty Council. Faculty Council will hear the student's appeal and have the opportunity to ask questions. The student will be excused while the Faculty Council further discusses the appeal. A vote will be taken by the Faculty Council, and a decision will be made. Sponsors are not part of the voting process.
-
The Faculty Council’s decision is final.
-
Upon dismissal, the member must then surrender the NHS emblem to the chapter adviser. If the member is unwilling to do this, the matter will be treated as a school disciplinary matter.
-
Once a student is dismissed, he/she is not eligible to reapply.
-

Graduation Criteria

-
All criteria must be met by the second Wednesday in April to graduate with an NHS collar. This includes
-
The member’s required NHS approved hours
-
Paid Dues
-
Less than 3 demerits
-
-
Unless the NHS member has an extenuating circumstance and prior approval from an NHS sponsor, no exceptions will be made.

Resignation

-
Those students who resign from the National Honor Society will never again be eligible for membership or its benefits.
-
Resignation from the honor society should involve the submission of a written statement by the resigning member that is dated and signed by both the student and his/her parent(s). Verbal resignations are insufficient to end membership. Students contemplating resignation should be aware of the consequences which are listed on this page.
-
Upon resignation, the member must then surrender the NHS emblem to the chapter adviser. If the member is unwilling to do this, the matter will be treated as a school disciplinary matter.
